After he died, the Gang read his will, which printed his name in all its stuffy, librarian-esque glory: Rupert Edmund Giles. When Rupert Giles was growing up, he wanted to be a fighter pilot. His dreams of aerial glory would unfortunately never come to fruition, though, because his future had already been decided.

He learned of this fate when he was just 10 years old, and was soon after sent to the Watchers Academy to train. After a training exercise went wrong and four of his fellow watchers-in-training died, he abandoned the profession entirely for a while. He enrolled at Oxford and then dropped out, started a punk rock band, and got mixed up with some pretty shady characters. He eventually found his way back to being a watcher after his foray into bad behavior, and his dabbling with darkness arguably made him a better mentor in the end.

When the gang got back together in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 8 comic series, Giles found himself with a tremendous responsibility: overseeing and managing potential slayers. As head of Slayer operations in England, he served as a mentor to many young girls, much in the way he did for Buffy in her early days as the Chosen One.

When Faith Lehane first arrived on the scene, Giles was one of many who had a hard time trusting her. Still, it was a bit surprising for many fans when Giles and Faith teamed up in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics.

After helping Buffy launch the Slayers organization, he ended worked in secret with Faith to assassinate Genevieve, a rogue potential slayer who was hell-bent on using her powers for evil. Buffy was, understandably, dismayed that her former watcher had gone behind her back, and the two parted ways for a time.

Giles and Faith then paired up to track down more potentials that were struggling to come to grips with their destiny. It was fitting work for both of them, and helped Giles continue his legacy of helping young slayers find their power. When most people think of Giles, things like books and tea probably come to mind. His personality also became darker over the years with insights into his past actions. He once reverted to his teenage personality of "Ripper," a violent criminal.

Giles had immense knowledge of demonology and Slayer combat including at least a theoretical knowledge of Jujutsu and Aikido , but excelling at the art of fencing , mainly due to his training as a Watcher.

Giles had moderate skill in hand-to-hand combat, [50] as well as sword fighting. While his demeanor was typically mild and polite, Giles was not above using raw violence to solve a problem, such as physically threatening Principal Snyder into readmitting Buffy to school after her expulsion, [31] pummeling Angel with a flaming baseball bat and burning down his hideout upon discovering that he had killed Jenny Calendar, [36] smothering Ben to death with his bare hands to prevent Glory's return when Buffy chooses to spare him, [47] beating Ethan for information [79] or simply to improve his mood, [4] manhandling Spike while ordering him to get over his obsession with Buffy, [82] and forcing Glory's minion, Slook , to talk by inflicting a painful-sounding injury.

Giles' calm demeanor and professionalism also offered him a detached state of authority even in the face of fearsome monsters, as demonstrated during his confrontation with a violent demon. Despite his abilities, Giles would be often knocked out during many attacks.

Giles was granted the powers of the Devon Coven in an attempt to stop Willow. During this time, he demonstrated powers such as teleportation, telekinesis, and energy projection. He lost all of these powers when Willow drained him and left him on the brink of death, but he recovered immediately after Xander calmed her down from her rampage. When Giles was resurrected as a child, he possessed magical abilities surpassing that of his older self.

We never saw Giles on-screen again after the series finale of Buffy , but there were plans to bring him over to the spinoff series, Angel , in season five. Anthony Stewart Head was planned to return to the role for the episode "A Hole in the World," the episode where Fred gets possessed by and is slowly dying from Illyria. In an attempt to save Fred, Angel and Spike would've approached Giles about a cure for Fred, and Giles would tell them that there was no way to save her.

Whedon wanted to use Giles as a character who both the audience and the characters would believe without question, but it proved to be too expensive to fly Head from England to LA. Giles's role was replaced by a new character, Drogyn, who is mystically compelled to always tell the truth. This has never been confirmed, but it has long been speculated and assumed that had original plans for Giles to make an appearance in season fivce of Angel actually followed through, we would have seen Angel kill Giles.

In the penultimate episode of the series finale, "Power Play," Angel would have used Giles's death as his way to be initiated into the Circle of the Black Thorn. It is actually very likely that these were the original plans as this is exactly what happened to Giles's replacement character, Drogyn the Battlebrand. Again, this has never been confirmed or denied by Joss Whedon himself and it's certainly something that someone needs to bring up to him one day, but considering Giles's actual fate in the comics, these were probably Whedon's original plans.

While it does seem as though there were plans for Giles to get killed off by Angel on-screen, it turns out those plans eventually did come to fruition in the comic books. In the comic book continuation of the eighth season, there is a Big Bad that calls itself Twilight.

Twilight manages to possess Angel and in the midst of battle, Twilight snaps Giles's neck in the exact same manner as Angelus snapped the neck of Giles's girlfriend from season two, Jenny Calendar.

Much like the death of Jenny Calendar, the death of Giles left fans shocked and devastated. In fact, this death was even more devastating as fans had gotten to know Giles since the very first season of the show. And just like that, he was gone in an instant. After indirectly killing Giles, Angel was a broken mess of a man. He may have been possessed at the time, but as far as he was concerned, Giles died at his hands.

He was determined to make things right and with the help of Faith, Angel crafted a special ritual to bring Giles back from the dead. The ritual worked, but not without its side effects. Giles returned, but in the form of his year old former self. Oddly enough, year old Giles looks suspiciously like Harry Potter. Anyway, as happy as she was to see Giles back among the living, Buffy couldn't help but make jokes about him being a child.

Giles' only friends seem to Buffy, Xander, Willow, Cordelia, and Oz in the first few seasons and then he and Anya grow close when she's introduced in later episodes. It seems very strange that Giles, who is significantly older than the company he keeps, doesn't have any friends his own age. Giles works for the Watchers' Council, who are based in England and make special trips to Sunnydale as needed.

One of those trips happens to be for Buffy's eighteenth birthday, where they convince Giles to inject his slayer with a serum that will take away her slayer strength and then send her to a run-down house, where a very strong and crazy vampire lives to see if she can survive. This episode is full of problems, the biggest being the fact that Giles injects Buffy with a drug against her will, a huge violation of her body, and something that doesn't sit well with viewers to this day.

Giles and the rest of the parents eat some "bad candy" in season three, which causes them to behave recklessly. Giles and Joyce sleep together while under the influence of the possessed chocolate bars and by doing so, Giles crosses a huge boundary. Of course, Buffy is understanding due to the fact that her mom and her watcher weren't in their right minds, but the jokes about it carry on through the entire series when really, it's something fans just want to forget about because regardless of his frame of mind, it was a line that shouldn't have been crossed and probably wouldn't be a punchline today.

Giles and Buffy's relationship has been criticized by fans more recently because going back to re-watch the series, it's not the healthiest relationship and in a lot of ways, it's very co-dependent. In the later seasons of the show, Giles frequently threatens to leave Sunnydale, or he does leave Sunnydale.

This back and forth, indecisive behavior is not good for Buffy and her friends, and in a lot of ways, it gaslights them.
